About Me
How did I get here?: Having grown up on the North Shore I am excited to begin my teaching career in West Vancouver School District. After graduating from Sutherland Secondary I attended UBC obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Chemistry with a Minor in Food and Resource Economics. During my time there I was lucky enough to complete and Undergraduate Honors Research Project, working in a graduate laboratory as a NSERC summer research student. During my time at UBC, I also had opportunities to work with students groups such as Responsible Consumption Week and the Undergraduate Chemistry Society. Upon completion of my degree I began volunteering in the Education Department at the Vancouver Aquarium where I was inspired to return to school to obtain my Bachelor of Education from UBC.
Interests: As an outdoor enthusiast there is no better place to live than the North Shore. Current hobbies include hiking, trail running, biking, and snowshoeing. Other less active hobbies include cooking, reading a good book, and backpacking around the globe (so far having been through Europe, Australia and India).
Teaching Philosophy: I believe that student learning is tied to two simple factors. First, students must see relevance, or how is this subject/content connected to their life and ask the question: why should I care? Second, they need to explore and internalize knowledge through personally discovery, or in other words students need to get their hands dirty. I hope to address the first factor by drawing attention to the fact that Science is all around us, allowing us to both better the lives of billions of people around the world yet still providing us with mysteries yet to be solved. The second factor is directly related to the motivation of the student (factor one) and the clear and concise setup of the task laid out for the student. The biggest gift we can give students is the ability to think independently and critically, something I hope to help to develop during this school year.
